Today I want to look at the topic of specialisations in the world of translating. What does it mean to be an expert translator is a certain field, like climbing or mountaineering? Whoever wants to work as a translator will sooner or later have to think about one or more areas of specialisation, and this is not always straightforward. I’ve put together a list of some websites with glossary resources for mountaineering terms which I have found particularly useful. There are many more out there, but these are a good place to start….
Planet Mountain
I collaborated with this Italian-English online magazine by translating a few of their articles into English. These translations called for a clear understanding of climbing terminology in addition to familiarity with the style and tone of communications in the mountaineering world.

Hervé Barmasse, a leading Italian alpinist and part of The North Face team of athletes, has a unique and inspirational way of engaging with his followers. My translations are sensitive to his style of writing whilst ensuring that the practical details regarding ascents and mountaineering terminology in press communications are correct.
